Nijubashimae
Nijubashimae
Station lies
on the Tokyo Metro Chiyoda Line
in Marunouchi, Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo.
It is located just one station south
of Otemachi Station, the biggest
subway station of Tokyo.
Marunouchi
being a financial and business district,
several banks and corporations have
their headquarters in the area surrounding
Nijubashimae Station. The Tokyo
Chamber of Commerce and Industry
is also located just one minute
walk from the station.
The
Imperial Palace is located right
in front of Nijubashimae Station,
with Nijubashi Bridge just one minute
on foot from Exit 2. In fact Nijubashimae
Station takes its name from Nijubashi,
the most famous bridge of Japan.
Nijubashi
Bridge
Nijubashi
Bridge has long been a symbol of
Tokyo. This wooden bridge, built
in 1888, spans the moat between
the outer and inner gardens surrounding
the Imperial Palace. Nijubashi
means “Double Bridge”. It
is so named because the girders
where the bridge rested were doubled
for support since the part of the
moat the bridge spans is very deep.
When the bridge was reconstructed
in 1964 (the present bridge is the
reconstructed one), the girders
were further reinforced with wooden
beams.
Nijubashi
Bridge is very popular with tourists,
who love to have their photographs
taken in front of it. The bridge
is open to the public only on two
occasions – the 2 nd of January
to wish the Imperial Family, and
on the 23 rd of December, which
is the Emperor's official birthday.
