Suitengu
Shrine
Suitengu
Shrine is located right in front
of Suitengumae Station. This Shinto
shrine, which is dedicated Suinanyoke
,
the god of smooth delivery, was
established in 1881 by the ninth
daimyo of Kurume. Its pavilion with
the curving roof was added much
later in 1967.
Suitengu
Shrine is approached by a flight
of stairs and is surrounded by shops
selling maternity clothes, children's
clothes and toys. Most of the worshippers
coming to Suitengu are expectant
mothers who come here to pray for
safe delivery. At the right of the
entrance to the altar, there is
a statue of a dog and a puppy. It
is believed that if an expectant
mother touches the dog (called Kodakara-inu),
it will bring safety to both the
mother and the child during childbirth.
On the 5 th of every month, a fair
is held on the shrine grounds.
