Shin Okubo

 

Shin Okubo Station lies on the JR East Yamanote Line in Shinjuku Ward less than one kilometer north of Shinjuku Station. It is also less than 3 minutes walk from Okubo Station on the Chuo Sobu Line.

 

Shin Okubo Station is situated in the Okubo district in the middle of Koreatown. Koreatown is the Korean ethnic enclave in Tokyo, for which Shin Okubo Station is mainly known. The area developed after World War II when immigrants from Korea started moving into Japan. Koreatown is made up of the main street Okubo Dori and the maze of the many small streets that join it. Okubo Dori is a busy and lively Korean commercial street, lined on both sides with mainly Korean, and to a lesser extent Chinese and Thai, shops and restaurants. The narrow streets that open from the main street have houses, low rise apartment blocks, and love hotels. As the Koreans have held on to their language and way of life, Koreatown is a good place to experience Korean culture.
